Woodruff Key for the V8 petrol engine. A semicircular (half-moon) key that seats in a shaft keyway to angularly locate and lock a mating gear, pulley or sprocket to its shaft, transmitting drive and preventing rotation between the two.

What is the Woodruff key (ERR2609) used for?

The Woodruff key is a semicircular steel key that locks a gear, pulley or sprocket to its shaft on the V8 EFI petrol engine. It seats in the shaft keyway and stops the mating part rotating independently, so drive is transmitted cleanly. It's used across V8 petrol Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38.

How many Woodruff keys do I need for the job?

Typically you'll need one Woodruff key per shaft location being worked on. It's sold singly, so check how many keyed components you're disturbing on the V8 EFI petrol engine before ordering. Some assemblies use more than one key.

Should the Woodruff key be replaced when removed?

Replacing the Woodruff key is usually sensible whenever it's disturbed during a V8 EFI petrol engine rebuild. A key that's been driven out or shows wear on its flanks can sit loose in the keyway, which typically lets the gear or pulley work loose. New keys are inexpensive insurance.
