Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC3245 rear propeller shaft and what does it do?
The FTC3245 rear propeller shaft transmits drive from the transfer box rear output flange to the rear axle differential on the Land Rover Defender 110. It carries a universal joint at each end and a sliding spline that absorbs suspension movement. This shaft is specified for 4-cylinder engines other than the 300TDi.
Which vehicles and engines does the FTC3245 rear propshaft fit?
The FTC3245 fits the Defender 110 from 1983 to 2006 with a 4-cylinder engine that isn't the 300TDi, for VIN KA925787 to 1A602284, and the Series III 109 with the 2.25 petrol engine. Confirm your engine and VIN, as 300TDi and V8 Defenders use a different rear shaft.
Who makes the FTC3245, and what are its alternative codes?
The FTC3245 rear propshaft is a Hardy Spicer OEM shaft. It cross-references several codes including FRC8391, FTC3245A, 561937, BR 1847 and BR 3075, so an older shaft carrying one of those numbers is replaced by the FTC3245 for the 4-cylinder non-300TDi Defender 110.
What are the signs a rear propshaft needs replacing?
A rear propshaft typically needs attention when the universal joints develop play or seize, or the sliding spline wears, causing vibration, a clunk on take-up or a knock under acceleration. On the Defender 110 the UJs are the usual wear point, and worn joints left unchecked can eventually let the shaft break free.
