Frequently asked questions

What does the STC488 water pump do?
The STC488 water pump circulates coolant for the 3.5L Rover V8 petrol engine. It's belt-driven from the front of the engine, and its hub also carries the engine cooling fan and the viscous drive coupling. It keeps coolant moving through the block, heads and radiator.
Which Land Rovers does this water pump fit?
This water pump fits the Defender 90 (1983-2006) with the 3.5L V8 twin carburettor petrol engine and the Range Rover Classic (1970-1994) 3.5L V8 petrol. It's the viscous-type pump whose hub carries the cooling fan.
What are the signs this water pump needs replacing?
A failing water pump usually weeps coolant from the bearing weep hole or develops a noisy, rough bearing. Because this pump also carries the fan and viscous coupling, bearing play can cause fan wobble. It's typically renewed once leaking or rough.
How do I know if I need the viscous-type pump?
This viscous-type pump has a hub that mounts the cooling fan and viscous coupling, used on the Defender 90 and Range Rover Classic 3.5L V8. Confirm your engine carries the fan on the pump rather than a separate mounting before ordering.
