View full detailsThe Discovery 2 (L318) is a body-on-frame ladder-chassis vehicle built from 1998 to 2004 at Solihull. It runs live axles front and rear with permanent four-wheel drive, and was available with the 2.5-litre Td5 inline-five diesel or the 4.0-litre and 4.6-litre Rover V8 petrol engines. Gearbox options were a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. Some later variants were fitted with ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement), an electronically controlled hydraulic anti-roll system.
Budget Parts stocks parts across the full range of Discovery 2 service and repair requirements. Coverage includes:
Genuine and direct OEM supply for the Discovery 2 is more limited than for later Discovery generations, as production ended in 2004. Budget Parts maintains aftermarket and compatible OEM stock for this generation, including parts that have been discontinued from the Land Rover Genuine supply chain.
Reference note: The JLR Classic parts portal at parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com lists the Discovery 2 under the L318 designation with a production range of 1998 to 2004 and covers the same parts categories listed above.
Fitment GuidanceThe Discovery 2 does not share a platform with the Discovery 3 or Discovery 4. It is the last Land Rover SUV to use the ladder-frame architecture derived from the original 1970 Range Rover underpinnings. When the Discovery 3 (L319) arrived in 2004 it moved to an entirely different Integrated Body Frame architecture with independent air suspension, meaning no structural, suspension, or driveline parts cross over between the two generations.
The Discovery 2 does share some non-structural hardware with the Defender where both were fitted with the same Td5 engine from 1998 onwards. Td5-specific engine components such as injector seals, dipstick O-rings, and manifold studs may be common across the two platforms, but always confirm fitment by part number before ordering.
ACE-equipped Discovery 2 vehicles use hydraulic actuators connected to the front and rear anti-roll bars. If your vehicle has ACE fitted, confirm this before ordering suspension components, as certain anti-roll bar and bush specifications differ from non-ACE variants.
For vehicles built before and after the 2002 model year update, some sensor, injection system, and electrical connector specifications changed. Confirm your production year from your VIN before ordering electrical and fuel system parts.
Use the engine variant, year, and category filters above the product grid to narrow this collection to parts that match your specific Discovery 2.
The Land Rover Discovery 2 was produced from 1998 to 2004 in a single generation with a mid-cycle update for the 2002 model year. Ordering by year and engine variant gives the best fitment match for the majority of parts. For electrical components, sensors, and fuel system items, confirming your exact production date via VIN is strongly recommended.
Your VIN is a 17-character code on the A-pillar door jamb, on the windscreen base, or in your vehicle documentation. The 10th character identifies the model year. Land Rover publishes a VIN model year guide at landrover.co.uk that maps the 10th character to the corresponding production year.
If you are ordering suspension, engine, or fuel system parts and are unsure of your production date, use the VIN reference before placing your order. Product listings on this site confirm fitment by model and year. Where a part fits a specific production range only, this is noted in the listing.
Technical GuidesThe guides below cover diagnostic and maintenance topics directly relevant to the Discovery 2 (L318). They provide technical depth on common failure patterns and correct replacement decisions. These guides support the parts range on this page and are intended to be read before placing an order where a fault has been identified.
Covers why the rear crossmember corrodes from the inside out on L318 vehicles, how to inspect for structural failure, and which repair section to select for a long-term fix. Relevant to any Discovery 2 owner preparing for an APK or MOT structural assessment, or dealing with visible corrosion on the rear chassis.
Discovery 2 rear crossmember →Explains why the Td5 exhaust manifold warps and cracks under load, and identifies the correct stud and manifold specifications for a permanent repair rather than a temporary fix. Relevant to Discovery 2 Td5 owners with ticking, whistling, or exhaust blow under cold start or load conditions.
Td5 exhaust manifold fix →Walks through every common cause of overheating on Land Rover vehicles, including the Discovery 2 Td5 and V8, and explains how to identify the failing component before ordering. Covers thermostat failure, water pump wear, coolant hose fatigue, and viscous fan coupling failure.
Land Rover overheating diagnosis →If you know the type of part you need, these category collections cover the relevant components across all compatible Land Rover models:
Air springs, shock absorbers, control arms, and steering components.
Land Rover suspension parts →Propshafts, driveshafts, universal joints, and output shaft seals.
Land Rover driveshaft parts →Discs, pads, calipers, and hydraulic components.
Land Rover brake parts →Radiators, thermostats, water pumps, and coolant hoses.
Land Rover cooling parts →The Land Rover Discovery 2, also known as the Discovery Series II, was produced from 1998 to 2004. It carries the chassis code L318 and was assembled at Solihull in the United Kingdom. It was replaced in 2004 by the Discovery 3 (L319), which uses a completely different platform.
The Discovery 2 was available with three engines: the 2.5-litre Td5 inline-five diesel, the 4.0-litre Rover V8 petrol, and the 4.6-litre Rover V8 petrol. The 4.6-litre V8 was available in certain markets on 2003 and 2004 model year vehicles. In the UK the only V8 offered was the 4.0-litre. Parts listings on this site confirm which engine variant each component fits.
No. The Discovery 2 uses a body-on-frame ladder chassis with live axles front and rear. The Discovery 3 (L319) uses an entirely different Integrated Body Frame architecture with independent air suspension. There is no structural, suspension, or driveline crossover between the two generations. Some generic fasteners and hardware may overlap, but always confirm compatibility by part number before ordering.
Some components are shared between the Discovery 2 and the Defender where both use the same Td5 engine. Certain Td5 engine items including injector seals, manifold studs, and dipstick O-rings may carry the same part number across both vehicles. Confirm fitment by part number for any engine component before ordering across model lines.
For most service and wear items, your model year and engine variant are sufficient. For electrical components, sensors, fuel system parts, and items that changed across the 2002 model year update, confirming your exact production date via VIN gives the most reliable fitment match. Your VIN is on the A-pillar door jamb or windscreen base. The 10th character identifies the model year.
