Wheel Cylinder Bleed Screw fits into the bleed nipple port of the wheel cylinder in the drum brake assembly, allowing the hydraulic circuit to be purged of air during brake bleeding.

On Series 2, 2A, and 3 models the same screw is also used in the hydraulic clutch circuit. Correct seating of the screw is essential to maintain a closed hydraulic circuit and prevent brake fluid loss.

Frequently asked questions

What is the wheel cylinder bleed screw 556508 used for on a Series Land Rover?
The bleed screw 556508 fits into the nipple port of each wheel cylinder and allows air to be purged from the hydraulic brake circuit during bleeding. On Series 2, 2A, and 3 models, the same screw is also used in the hydraulic clutch circuit, so a complete service may need several.
How many bleed screws are typically needed for a full brake bleed on a Series Land Rover?
A full brake bleed typically requires four screws, one per wheel cylinder. On Series 2, 2A, and 3 models that also use this screw in the clutch hydraulic circuit, an additional screw may be needed there. Always check existing screws for corrosion before reusing them.
Why do bleed screws seize on Series Land Rovers?
Corrosion is the primary cause. The screws are exposed to moisture and road contamination, and hydraulic circuits that are rarely bled are especially prone to seizure. Applying penetrating fluid and heat before opening the nipple is advisable, particularly on Series 1, 2, and 3 vehicles.
