Synchro Cone (Baulk Ring) - LT95 4-Speed Gearbox

This synchro cone, also known as a baulk ring, is a component of the synchroniser assembly within the LT95 4-speed gearbox. It acts as a friction cone to equalise the rotational speeds of the gear and the synchro hub before engagement, enabling smooth, clash-free gear changes.

Worn or glazed synchro cones are the most common cause of baulking and difficult gear selection in the LT95 unit. They are replaced as part of a full LT95 gearbox overhaul.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LT95 synchro cone (baulk ring) and what does it do?
The synchro cone, or baulk ring, is a friction component inside the synchroniser assembly of the Land Rover LT95 4-speed gearbox. It matches the speed of the gear and synchro hub before engagement, giving smooth, clash-free shifts. It's fitted to early Defender, Series II/IIA/III and Range Rover Classic LT95 units.
What are the signs an LT95 synchro cone needs replacing?
Baulking, crunching or difficulty selecting a gear on the LT95 gearbox usually points to worn or glazed synchro cones. They wear with mileage and heat, and selection gets progressively harder if left. Cones are typically renewed during a full LT95 gearbox overhaul rather than on their own.
How do I confirm this synchro cone fits my gearbox?
This synchro cone fits only the LT95 4-speed gearbox, used in early Land Rover Defender, Series II/IIA/III and Range Rover Classic (up to 1986). Check your gearbox is an LT95 and not a later LT77 or R380 before ordering, as the synchro parts are not interchangeable between them.
