Aftermarket Part

Oil Seal – Rear Output Shaft seals the rear output shaft of the LT95 combined gearbox and transfer box, preventing oil leakage where the shaft exits the casing to drive the rear propeller shaft.

The seal runs against the rotating output shaft to retain lubricant within the transfer box. A hardened or worn seal lets oil weep past the rear output, contaminating the propshaft flange and lowering the transfer-box oil level, and should be renewed whenever the rear output flange is disturbed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rear output shaft oil seal for?
The rear output shaft oil seal seals the rear output of the LT95 combined gearbox and transfer box, where the shaft exits the casing to drive the rear propshaft. It runs against the rotating shaft to keep transfer-box oil in and stop it weeping onto the propshaft flange.
Which vehicles use this LT95 output seal?
This seal fits Land Rovers with the LT95 combined gearbox and V8 engine: Series III Stage 1 V8 (1979-1985), Defender V8 (1983-1986), and Range Rover Classic V8 (1971-1986). The LT95 gearbox is the key check, so confirm your gearbox type before ordering.
When should the rear output seal be replaced?
Replace the rear output shaft seal when you see oil weeping at the rear of the transfer box or oil on the propshaft flange. A hardened or worn seal slowly lowers the transfer-box oil level. It's good practice to renew this seal whenever the rear output flange is removed.
Is replacing this seal a DIY job?
Replacing the rear output seal means removing the rear propshaft and output flange to reach the seal in the LT95 casing. It's typically within reach of a competent home mechanic with axle stands and a flange holding tool, though resetting the flange nut on reassembly matters. Many owners use a workshop.
