Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR1632G oil seal?
The ERR1632G is the crankshaft front oil seal, fitted to the engine front cover. It seals around the crankshaft nose where it exits the timing cover, keeping engine oil in and stopping leaks at the front of the engine.
Where does the ERR1632G fit and how many are needed?
The ERR1632G sits in the front timing cover, sealing the crankshaft as it passes through to the front pulley. There's one per engine. It's often renewed when the timing cover, pulley or front crank seal area is disturbed for other work.
What are the signs the front crank seal has failed?
A failed front crankshaft seal usually shows as an oil leak at the front of the engine, often around the crank pulley, with oil misting onto the belts or dripping below. A perished or hardened seal should be replaced to stop the leak.
Should the seal be replaced when the front cover comes off?
Yes, fit a new front crank seal whenever the timing cover or pulley is removed. The ERR1632G is a wear item, and a reused seal often leaks once disturbed. It's a cheap part to renew while you have access.
Which engines does the ERR1632G fit?
The ERR1632G fits a wide range of Land Rover engines including the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol and diesel, 200TDi, and 3.5L to 4.6L V8, across the Series 2 and 3, Defender, Discovery 1 and 2, Range Rover Classic and P38. Check your engine against the fitment list.
