Rubber Sealing Ring for gear selector shafts in the LT76 gearbox and LT95 transfer box.

In the LT76 gearbox, two rings are fitted per unit, sealing the forward selector shaft bore against oil migration. In the LT95 transfer box, the ring seals the transfer selector shaft to prevent oil leakage at that bore.

Frequently asked questions

What does the rubber sealing ring 272596 seal on a Land Rover?
The sealing ring 272596 seals selector shaft bores to prevent oil migration. In the LT76 gearbox fitted to Series 1, 2, 2A, and 3, it seals the forward selector shaft bore. In the LT95 transfer box fitted to early Defenders and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994), it seals the transfer selector shaft bore.
How many sealing rings do I need for a full rebuild?
Two rings are required per LT76 gearbox, one at each selector shaft bore, as confirmed in the SAP fitment data. For the LT95 transfer box on the Defender (1983-2006) and Range Rover Classic, the ring seals the transfer selector shaft; consult your workshop manual for the exact quantity required.
What are the signs the selector shaft sealing ring needs replacing?
The sealing ring typically fails through rubber hardening and compression set, losing its ability to seal. Oil weeping from the selector shaft area of the LT76 gearbox or LT95 transfer box is the main symptom. Oil in the gearbox tunnel or transfer case area confirms a failed ring.
