Frequently asked questions

What does the gearbox selector ball do?
The selector ball is a hardened steel detent ball in the manual gearbox selection mechanism. Spring-loaded against the selector shaft, it indexes each gear into position for positive engagement and helps stop the box jumping out of gear. It's used in the LT77 and R380 5-speed gearboxes.
What happens if the selector detent ball wears?
A worn detent ball or weak detent spring typically causes the gearbox to jump out of gear or give vague gear selection. Replacing the ball restores positive indexing. It's a low-cost part often renewed when the LT77 or R380 selector mechanism is already apart.
Which Land Rover gearboxes use this selector ball?
This selector ball fits the LT77 and R380 5-speed manual gearboxes used in the Land Rover Series 2 and 3, Defender up to 2016, Discovery 1 and 2, Range Rover Classic and P38. Confirm your gearbox type before ordering.
