Frequently asked questions

What is the FRC1780 output shaft oil seal and what does it do?
The FRC1780 output shaft oil seal seals the front or rear output shaft of the LT76 transfer gearbox, where the shaft passes through the housing. It keeps the transfer case lubricant in and contamination out at the rotating shaft. The same seal also served as the differential pinion seal on the very earliest Series 1.
How many output shaft seals are needed?
Typically two output shaft seals are used on the LT76 transfer gearbox, one at the front output and one at the rear. They're usually renewed together when resealing the transfer case. This seal fits Series Land Rovers built between 1948 and 1983.
What are the signs this output shaft seal needs replacing?
A worn output shaft oil seal usually shows as oil weeping from the transfer gearbox output, fresh oil along the propshaft, and a dropping gearbox oil level. Left leaking, it lowers lubricant levels and can contaminate the brakes or chassis. It's renewed whenever the output flange is removed.
Does this seal fit all Series transfer boxes?
This seal fits the LT76 transfer gearbox on all Series Land Rovers from 1948 to 1983, but not the LT95 box used on the Stage 1 V8 or the 101 Forward Control. On the very early 80-inch Series 1 (1948 to around 1950) the same seal also served as the differential pinion seal. Confirm your transfer box type.
