Wheel Cylinder for the rear drum brake assembly, left-hand side.

The wheel cylinder forms part of the hydraulic drum brake circuit, converting hydraulic pressure delivered from the master cylinder into the mechanical force that pushes the brake shoes outward against the drum. It mounts to the rear backplate in the left-hand position and uses a 5/16 UNF threaded connection.

The matching right-hand cylinder is part number 243302.

Frequently asked questions

What does this rear wheel cylinder do?
This rear wheel cylinder is the hydraulic slave cylinder in the Series Land Rover rear drum brake, left-hand side. It converts brake-line pressure into the outward force that presses the brake shoes against the drum. It mounts to the rear backplate on short-wheelbase (88in) Series I, II, IIA and III models.
What brake pipe union does this cylinder use?
This cylinder uses a 5/16 UNF union nut for the brake pipe connection. Check that your existing brake pipe or flexible hose end matches the 5/16 UNF thread before fitting, as union sizes varied across Series production.
Left or right, and how many do I need?
This is the left-hand rear cylinder. Each rear drum brake uses one cylinder, so a SWB axle needs two in total, one per side. The right-hand side uses a separate cylinder, so order one of each when rebuilding both rear wheels.
Why do these wheel cylinders fail?
Rear wheel cylinders typically fail when the rubber seals perish or the bore pits with corrosion, letting brake fluid leak past the piston. Symptoms include a sinking pedal, fluid behind the drum, and grabbing or weak braking. Replace the shoes too if fluid has soaked them.
