Lock Plate for the front axle assembly.

This metal tab washer locks fastener heads in position by bending a tab against the bolt head or nut after torquing, preventing loosening under vibration. Used to secure the front brake backplate to the axle stub and at swivel pin housing fastener locations. Replace with a new plate whenever fasteners are disturbed - do not reuse a previously bent lock plate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lock plate 277311 used for on a Series Land Rover?
The lock plate 277311 is a tab washer that locks fastener heads at the swivel pin housing and front brake backplate locations on Series 2/2A/3 front axles. After torquing, a tab is bent against the bolt head or nut to prevent loosening under vibration. Cross-references are 232416 and BR 0965.
Can the lock plate be reused after the fasteners are retorqued?
No. The lock plate must be replaced with a new one every time the fasteners are disturbed. Once bent, the tab loses its locking ability and won't reliably engage a new position. On brake backplate and swivel pin housing fasteners, reusing a bent plate is a safety risk.
Why does the front axle lock plate matter on a Series Land Rover?
The lock plate prevents brake backplate bolts and swivel pin housing fasteners from backing off under the vibration and load cycling typical of Land Rover use. Fastener loosening at the brake backplate can compromise drum alignment and braking performance on the Series 2/2A/3.
