Core Plug for the engine casting. Core plugs seal the core holes left in the cylinder block after the casting sand is removed during manufacture.

Once fitted, the plug closes the passage against the water jacket. It also acts as a frost plug, intended to be pushed out by the expansion of freezing coolant to relieve pressure and help protect the block from freeze damage.

Diameter: 1 3/4 inch (44.5 mm).

Frequently asked questions

What is a core plug and what does it do?
A core plug seals the core holes left in the engine block after casting sand is removed during manufacture. Once fitted, it closes the passage against the water jacket. It also acts as a frost plug, designed to push out if the coolant freezes and relieve pressure that could otherwise crack the block.
What size is this core plug and how many does an engine use?
This core plug is 1 3/4 inch (44.5 mm) diameter. An engine block typically carries several core plugs in differing sizes along its sides and ends, so check how many of the 1 3/4 inch size your block needs. Measure the housing bore before ordering.
Why do core plugs need replacing?
Core plugs typically corrode from the coolant side over time, weeping or leaking once the metal thins. On Series and older Defender engines they're often renewed as a set during an engine rebuild or when chasing a coolant leak, since access is far easier with the engine stripped down.
