Rocker Shaft - the hollow shaft that carries the rocker arms in the valvetrain, mounted across the cylinder head rocker pedestals.

The rocker arms pivot on the shaft to transfer motion from the pushrods to the valve stems, and its internal bore distributes pressurised oil to lubricate the rocker gear. Correct alignment of the shaft and its support posts is essential to even valve actuation and oil feed across all cylinders.

For the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol and naturally-aspirated diesel engines.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rocker shaft and what does it do?
The rocker shaft is the hollow shaft that carries the rocker arms across the cylinder head. The rockers pivot on it to transfer motion from the pushrods to the valve stems, and its internal bore feeds pressurised oil to lubricate the rocker gear. Even alignment across the pedestals keeps valve actuation and oil feed consistent.
Which engines and models use this rocker shaft?
This rocker shaft fits the Series II and III (1958-1985) and Defender (1983-2006) with 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol and naturally-aspirated diesel engines. It's the 4-cylinder version specifically.
What are the signs a rocker shaft needs replacing?
Rocker shafts typically wear where the rocker arms pivot and around the oil feed holes, which shows up as a top-end tapping noise and uneven oil delivery to the rockers. Ridging or scoring on the shaft surface is the usual reason to renew it.
Does this rocker shaft replace the earlier Series part numbers?
Yes, this rocker shaft supersedes the earlier Land Rover numbers 524839, 524841, 554070 and 554073 used on Series engines, and cross-references to ERC6340. Confirm your engine is a 2.25L or 2.5L 4-cylinder before ordering.
