Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC5218 release bearing guide used for?
The FTC5218 release bearing guide is the sleeve on the front cover of the manual gearbox that the clutch release bearing slides along. It surrounds the input shaft at the bellhousing and keeps the release bearing square to the pressure plate when you press the clutch.
Which gearboxes and models does it fit?
The FTC5218 fits the LT77 and R380 five-speed manual gearboxes, on the Defender 200Tdi and 300Tdi, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. Check your VIN, as Discovery 1 fitment runs from VIN FA393361 to WA799999.
When should the release bearing guide be replaced?
Replace the release bearing guide if it's worn, scored or grooved where the bearing runs, since that causes clutch drag, judder or noise. It's typically renewed as part of a clutch overhaul while the gearbox is out, so you're not repeating the job later.
What are the alternative part numbers for the FTC5218?
The FTC5218 is also listed under the cross references FTC5218X and FTC1271, and carries the BritPart code FTC5218. If you've been quoted one of those numbers, it points to the same release bearing guide for the LT77 and R380 gearboxes.
