Brand Delphi
Upper Link Ball Joint for the rear suspension A-frame (top link).

The joint sits at the apex of the rear A-frame, where the frame meets the top of the rear axle. It locates the axle laterally and resists drive and braking torque while allowing the axle to articulate over uneven ground. The tapered ball pin presses into the A-frame fulcrum bracket and is normally fitted using a dedicated press tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Upper Link Ball Joint and where does it sit?
The Upper Link Ball Joint sits at the apex of the rear A-frame, where the frame meets the top of the rear axle on the Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. It locates the axle laterally and resists drive and braking torque while allowing the axle to articulate.
Is this an OEM joint and how is it fitted?
This is an OEM joint made by Delphi. The tapered ball pin presses into the A-frame fulcrum bracket, so fitting normally needs a dedicated press tool and is typically a workshop job to seat the pin squarely.
What are the signs the rear A-frame ball joint is worn?
A worn upper link ball joint typically shows as a knock or clunk from the rear axle over bumps, or rear axle movement under acceleration and braking. Play here reduces rear-end stability because the joint locates the axle laterally.
How do I confirm this fits my vehicle?
This joint fits the Defender 1986-2006 throughout, Defender 2007-2016 from VIN 7A000001, Discovery 1 (1989-1998), and Range Rover Classic up to VIN KA638683. Check your chassis number, since the Classic changed after VIN KA638683.
