Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC4442 rear shock absorber fit on, and how is it different from the SWB version?
The RTC4442 is the rear hydraulic shock absorber for the long-wheelbase chassis, fitting Land Rover Series 2, 2A, and 3 on the 109-inch wheelbase, and Defender 110 and 130. It's dimensionally different from the short-wheelbase rear shock and is typically not interchangeable with the SWB version.
How many RTC4442 shock absorbers are needed for a full rear replacement?
Two are needed for a complete rear axle change, one per side. The RTC4442 is a single unit. Replacing both rear shocks at the same time gives even damping across the rear axle, which matters particularly on the 110 and 130 with their greater payload capacity.
What are the signs of worn rear shock absorbers on a Defender 110 or Series 109?
Worn rear dampers on long-wheelbase Land Rovers typically show as excessive bounce when laden, wallowing over corrugations, and the rear squatting or pitching under braking or acceleration. On 110 and 130 pick-up variants, a leaking or weak rear shock also causes instability when carrying heavy loads.
