Axle Breather for the front axle housing on vehicles without a remote breather pipe assembly.

This screw-in vent allows the air inside the front axle housing to equalise pressure as the differential oil and internal air expand and contract with heat cycling during use. A blocked or failed breather can allow pressure to build up and force oil past the hub seals or axle shaft seals, leading to contamination of the brakes or wheel bearings.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Front Axle Breather (515845) do?
The front axle breather (515845) is a screw-in vent that allows air pressure inside the front axle housing to equalise as the differential oil expands and contracts with heat. Without it, pressure builds inside the axle and can force oil past the hub or axle shaft seals, causing brake or wheel bearing contamination.
Which vehicles use this breather?
The front axle breather (515845) fits Series 1, Series 2/3, and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994) vehicles equipped with the direct-mount breather at the axle housing, not the remote breather pipe assembly. Confirm your vehicle lacks a remote breather pipe before ordering.
What are the signs that an axle breather needs replacing?
A blocked or failed axle breather typically shows as oil leaking past the hub seals or axle shaft seals, sometimes causing oily brakes or contaminated wheel bearings. On Series and Range Rover Classic axles, the breather can seize or become blocked with mud over time.
