Axle Flange Kit for the pinion drive flange of the Salisbury rear differential.

The flange transmits drive from the differential pinion to the rear propeller shaft and carries the running surface for the pinion oil seal. The kit supplies the drive flange with mud shield fitted, the pinion oil seal (STC4401), and the pinion nut and washer.

The Salisbury pinion uses a collapsible spacer to set bearing pre-load, so the pinion nut must be tightened to the manufacturer's torque procedure rather than simply pulled up tight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the STC4403 axle flange kit used for?
The STC4403 axle flange supplies the pinion drive flange for the Salisbury rear differential on the Land Rover Defender. It transmits drive from the diff pinion to the rear propshaft and carries the running surface for the pinion oil seal, so renewing it restores a clean sealing surface and a sound propshaft coupling.
How do I know this fits my Defender?
This flange fits the Land Rover Defender 110 and 130 with the Salisbury rear axle, from chassis XA159807 onwards (1983-2006). It doesn't suit the 90. The Salisbury axle is typically identified by its bolt-on rear differential cover, so check your axle and chassis number before ordering.
Why does the pinion nut need a specific torque procedure?
The Salisbury pinion uses a collapsible spacer to set the bearing pre-load, so the pinion nut must be tightened with the manufacturer's torque procedure rather than just pulled tight. Over-crushing the spacer ruins the pre-load and means fitting a new one, so follow the workshop manual sequence.
What are the signs the pinion flange or its seal needs replacing?
Typically oil leaking from the rear of the Salisbury differential, where the pinion seal runs on the flange, is the main sign. A worn or scored flange surface usually lets a new seal weep too, which is why the flange and seal are renewed together. Driveline vibration can also point to a worn flange.
