Steering Damper Stabiliser - a hydraulic damper fitted within the steering linkage assembly to control the oscillation and vibration transmitted through the track rod and drag link.

Acting as a stabilising shock absorber, it mounts between the axle bracket and the steering linkage and damps the rapid lateral movements of the linkage components. This reduces steering kickback and shimmy caused by road surface impacts and helps maintain directional stability and steering control.

Frequently asked questions

What does the STC786 Steering Damper Stabiliser do on a Land Rover?
The STC786 is a hydraulic steering damper that mounts between the front axle and the steering linkage. It absorbs lateral shocks and oscillations transmitted through the steering, reducing kickback, shimmy and wobble caused by road surface impacts on Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
What are the symptoms of a failed steering damper on a Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic?
A worn steering damper typically causes front-end shimmy or steering wheel vibration at speed, particularly over rough terrain or after hitting a pothole. Steering wander and wheel wobble are common signs that the STC786 has lost its damping capacity.
Is there a VIN limit for the STC786 on the Range Rover Classic?
Yes. STC786 fits Discovery 1 (1989-1998, all variants) and Range Rover Classic up to VIN JA621296, as stated in the fitment note. Vehicles after VIN JA621296 used a different steering arrangement. Confirm your VIN before ordering.
