This drive shaft transmits torque from the front differential through the swivel housing to the front wheel hub. It uses the early 23-spline inner joint interface fitted to Defender models produced before VIN KA930455. Supplied as a single left-hand shaft.

Which Defenders take this 23-spline left-hand axle shaft?

This left-hand front axle shaft fits the Land Rover Defender from 1983 to 1993 with the early 23-spline CV joint, up to VIN KA930455. Later Defenders changed the spline count, so the wrong shaft won't engage the CV joint. Check your VIN against KA930455 and confirm the 23/10 spline count before ordering.

Is this shaft for the left or right side, and do I need a pair?

This is the left-hand front axle shaft only, supplied as a single shaft. The right-hand side uses a different part, so order that separately if you're renewing both sides. On the Land Rover Defender the left and right front shafts differ, so fit the correct side.

What are the signs a front axle shaft has failed?

A failing front axle shaft or its CV joint usually shows up as knocking or clicking on full lock, vibration under power, or play in the drive line. On the Land Rover Defender the early 23-spline shafts can wear at the splines and joint. If it shears, the front wheel loses drive on that side.
