Frequently asked questions

What does this rear half shaft do?
The right-hand rear half shaft transfers torque from the rear differential to the rear wheel hub on the Land Rover Defender. It's the early 23-spline type, a solid steel shaft supplied as a single right-hand unit.
Which Defenders does it fit?
This half shaft fits the early Land Rover Defender built 1983 to 1993, up to VIN KA930455, which used the 23-spline inner joint. Confirm your vehicle falls before that VIN break before ordering.
How do I know if I need the 23-spline shaft?
The 23-spline count is the key difference to check, as later Defenders moved to a different spline arrangement that isn't interchangeable. Use your VIN, with KA930455 as the cut-off, to confirm you need the early 23-spline right-hand shaft.
Why do half shafts fail?
Half shafts typically fail from spline wear or by snapping under shock loads, often during heavy off-road use or with large tyres. Symptoms include a clunk on drive take-up or loss of drive to that wheel.
