CV Joint (constant velocity joint) sits at the outer end of the front halfshaft, within the swivel housing of the front axle.

It transmits drive from the halfshaft to the stub axle while allowing the front wheel to turn through its steering angle, holding a constant rotational speed across the joint. This is the early type with 23 internal splines on the halfshaft end.

Pack the joint with the correct grade of grease on assembly and renew the swivel housing oil seal when fitting.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Defender up to 2016

Frequently asked questions

What does the AEU2522 CV joint do?
The AEU2522 CV (constant velocity) joint sits at the outer end of the front halfshaft, inside the swivel housing. It transmits drive to the front wheel while letting it turn through the steering angle at a constant speed. This is the early type with 23 internal splines, fitting early Defender front axles.
What does 23 spline mean and will it fit my Defender?
23 spline refers to the 23 internal splines on the halfshaft end of this CV joint, the early-type count. Later axles typically used a different spline count, so this won't fit them. It suits early Defenders up to a specific chassis break, so check your chassis number against the fitment before ordering.
What are the signs a CV joint needs replacing?
A clicking or knocking noise on full steering lock is the classic sign of a worn CV joint, often with vibration under drive. On Defenders the joint wears once its grease is lost through a split gaiter. Repack the joint with the correct grease on assembly and renew the swivel housing oil seal.
Does this CV joint come with grease or seals?
The AEU2522 is supplied as the CV joint only. You'll typically need fresh swivel grease and a new swivel housing oil seal when fitting, since the seal is usually disturbed during removal. Pack the joint with the correct grade of grease on assembly to protect it from premature wear.
