Aftermarket Part
Aftermarket: Quality alternative. This is a quality alternative, designed to fit and function like the original part, often at a more competitive price.
Half Shaft – Rear LH – 10-Spline is the rear axle drive shaft for the left-hand side. It transmits drive from the differential out to the rear hub within the axle casing.

The inner end splines into the differential side gear and the 10-spline outer end drives the hub. This is the threaded-end type, in which the hub is retained on the shaft by a nut and split pin.

Half shafts take repeated shock loading, so worn splines or a twisted or sheared shaft are the usual failures. A shaft showing spline wear or distortion should be renewed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rear left-hand half shaft used for?
The rear left-hand half shaft transmits drive from the differential out to the rear hub on 88-inch Series 2, 2A and 3 models. Its inner end splines into the differential side gear and the 10-spline outer end drives the hub on the left-hand side of the axle.
How is the hub held onto this half shaft?
The hub is retained on this half shaft by a nut and split pin, as it's the threaded-end type, and it's supplied with the nut and split pin. It fits the 88-inch Series 2, 2A and 3 left-hand side up to July 1980.
Why do rear half shafts fail on Series Land Rovers?
Rear half shafts take repeated shock loading, so worn splines or a twisted or sheared shaft are the usual failures. A shaft showing spline wear or distortion should be renewed. Failures are more common off-road and when traction is suddenly regained.
Is fitting the left-hand rear half shaft a DIY job?
Fitting the left-hand rear half shaft is typically a moderate DIY job. The shaft withdraws from the hub end after the hub nut and split pin are removed, without disturbing the differential. Basic hand tools are normally enough on the Series 88-inch axle.
