Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC1984 circlip used for?
The RTC1984 circlip retains the mainshaft bearing inside the bearing housing in the Land Rover Series 2, Series 3 and Defender gearbox. It sits in a machined groove and stops the bearing walking out of the housing under load. Without it the mainshaft bearing can migrate and cause gearbox damage.
How many RTC1984 circlips are needed for a gearbox rebuild?
Typically one RTC1984 circlip is needed per mainshaft bearing housing. It's usually replaced as a matter of course during a Series or Defender gearbox rebuild, since a stretched or distorted circlip won't hold the bearing securely once refitted.
Should the circlip be reused during a gearbox rebuild?
Circlips are best replaced rather than reused during a gearbox rebuild. Removal and refitting can spring or distort the RTC1984, reducing its grip in the groove. A fresh circlip keeps the mainshaft bearing correctly seated in the housing.
