What is the RTC7169 lock washer and what does it do?

The RTC7169 is a tab-type lock washer for the gearbox mainshaft. Its tang bends up against the special mainshaft retaining nut to lock it and stop it backing off under load. It's used where the mainshaft meets the transfer box on Defender and Series II/III gearboxes.

Should the lock washer be reused or replaced?

Replace the lock washer every time. Tab washers are single-use by design, the locking tang work-hardens and can crack once it's been bent and straightened. Fitting a fresh RTC7169 each time you disturb the mainshaft nut keeps the nut securely locked.

Which nut does this lock washer work with?

The RTC7169 pairs with the special mainshaft nut, part 217477, when a Fairey overdrive clutch sleeve is fitted. The washer locks that nut against rotation. Order both together if you're rebuilding the mainshaft, as the locking tab won't survive reuse.
