Aftermarket Part

Oil Seal Retainer for the front axle swivel housing assembly. This retaining plate holds the swivel housing oil seal square against the chrome swivel ball, sealing the constant-velocity joint housing and retaining the swivel lubricant.

The plate bolts to the outer face of the swivel housing, clamping the seal so it bears evenly on the ball throughout the steering arc. A worn or distorted retainer allows the seal to lift and leak, so it is renewed whenever the swivel seal is replaced.

Frequently asked questions

What does the swivel housing oil seal retainer do?
The oil seal retainer is a plate that clamps the swivel housing oil seal square against the chrome swivel ball on the front axle. It holds the seal so it bears evenly on the ball through the steering arc, sealing the CV joint housing and keeping the swivel lubricant in.
Which Land Rovers does this swivel housing seal retainer fit?
This retainer fits the front axle swivel housing on the Defender (1983-2016), Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994). It clamps the swivel ball oil seal on the front axle of these models. Confirm whether you need one or a pair before ordering.
How many retainers are needed for a swivel overhaul?
Typically two retainers are needed for a full front axle overhaul, one per side, since each swivel housing has its own seal and retaining plate. They're usually renewed whenever the swivel ball seals are replaced, as a distorted retainer lets the new seal leak.
Why does the swivel seal retainer need replacing?
A worn or distorted retainer lets the swivel oil seal lift off the ball and leak axle oil. On these front axles the plate is renewed whenever the swivel seal is changed, so the new seal seats evenly. Reusing a bent retainer is a common cause of a repeat leak.
