Oil Pump Relief Valve Spring for the 3.5L V8 petrol engine lubrication system.

The spring sets the opening pressure of the oil pump pressure-relief valve. As oil pressure rises against the spring the valve lifts to bypass surplus oil back to the sump, capping peak pressure and protecting the lubrication circuit. Renewed when overhauling the oil pump or when correcting an oil pressure fault.

Frequently asked questions

What does the oil pump relief valve spring do?
The oil pump relief valve spring sets the opening pressure of the pressure-relief valve in the V8 oil pump. As oil pressure rises against the spring, the valve lifts to bypass surplus oil back to the sump, capping peak pressure and protecting the lubrication system on the 3.5L V8 petrol engine.
When should the relief valve spring be replaced?
Replace the oil pump relief valve spring when overhauling the oil pump or chasing an oil pressure fault on the V8. A weak or broken spring can let oil pressure drop or spike, so it's typically renewed as part of any oil pump rebuild rather than reused.
Which Land Rover V8 engines does this spring fit?
This relief valve spring fits the V8 petrol oil pump on the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1986-1994), covering Twin Carb and EFI engines. Confirm you have the Rover V8 oil pump before ordering.
