Main Bearing Set - V8 - Standard is the set of crankshaft main bearing shells that carry the crankshaft in the V8 cylinder block, in standard size.

The shells seat in the block main webs and bearing caps, setting the running clearance and maintaining the oil film that supports the crankshaft under load. Standard size suits a crankshaft whose main journals remain at original diameter; where the journals have been reground, a matching undersize set must be used instead.

For the 4.0L and 4.6L V8 EFI petrol engine. Supplied as a complete set covering all crankshaft main journals.

Measure the journals and check running clearances on assembly rather than assuming standard size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Main Bearing Set – V8 – Standard used for?
The main bearing set is the crankshaft main bearing shells that carry the crankshaft in the V8 cylinder block, in standard size. The shells seat in the block main webs and caps, setting the running clearance and maintaining the oil film that supports the crankshaft under load.
What is the difference between standard and undersize main bearings?
Standard size main bearings suit a crankshaft whose main journals are still at their original diameter. If the journals have been reground, you need a matching undersize set instead, so measure or check your crankshaft before ordering.
Which V8 engines does this bearing set fit?
This standard main bearing set fits the Defender (1987-2006) 4.0L V8 EFI petrol, the Discovery 2 (1998-2004) V8, and the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) 4.0L and 4.6L V8 EFI petrol engines.
When are main bearings replaced?
Main bearings are replaced during an engine rebuild or when worn bearings cause low oil pressure or a deep knock from the bottom end. Worn shells lose the oil film that protects the crankshaft, so they are renewed as a set.
