Frequently asked questions

What does the rear wheel cylinder do on a Series Land Rover?
The rear wheel cylinder is the hydraulic slave cylinder in the rear drum brake. It converts brake-line pressure into the force that pushes the brake shoes against the drum. On Series I, II, IIA and III short-wheelbase (88in) models it mounts to the rear backplate, right-hand side.
How many rear wheel cylinders do I need for a brake rebuild?
Each rear drum brake uses one wheel cylinder, so a SWB rear axle needs two: one right-hand and one left-hand. This is the right-hand rear cylinder. The left-hand side uses a separate cylinder, so order one of each if you're rebuilding both rear wheels.
Why do Series wheel cylinders fail, and what are the signs?
Wheel cylinders typically fail when the internal seals perish or the bore corrodes, letting fluid weep past the piston. Signs include a soft or sinking pedal, fluid on the backplate or drum, and uneven braking. A leak usually contaminates the shoes, so replace soaked shoes alongside the cylinder.
Which Series models does this rear cylinder fit?
This rear wheel cylinder fits Land Rover Series I, II, IIA and III short-wheelbase (88in) models, roughly 1954 to 1984. It's the right-hand rear position. Long-wheelbase and front brake applications differ, so confirm your wheelbase and side before ordering.
