Frequently asked questions

What is the rear wheel cylinder and what does it do?
The rear wheel cylinder is the hydraulic slave cylinder in the Series Land Rover rear drum brake, left-hand side. Brake-line pressure pushes its pistons out, forcing the brake shoes against the drum to slow the wheel. It bolts to the rear backplate on short-wheelbase (88in) Series I, II, IIA and III models.
Left or right, and how many do I need?
This is the left-hand rear cylinder. Drum brakes use one cylinder per wheel, so a SWB axle takes two, left and right. The right-hand side is a separate part, so order one of each if you're overhauling both rear brakes.
Why do Series wheel cylinders fail?
Series wheel cylinders typically fail when their seals perish or the bore corrodes, letting fluid weep past the piston. Look for a soft or sinking pedal, fluid behind the drum, and uneven braking. Fluid-soaked shoes should be replaced alongside the cylinder.
Which models does this fit?
This left-hand rear wheel cylinder fits Land Rover Series I, II, IIA and III short-wheelbase (88in) models, roughly 1954 to 1984. It's the rear drum brake position. Long-wheelbase and front brakes differ, so confirm your wheelbase and side before ordering.
