Glow Plug (cold-start heater plug) threaded into the cylinder head, part of the diesel cold-start heating circuit.

The heated tip projects into the combustion chamber and warms the charge during the pre-start phase, assisting compression ignition when the engine is cold. It draws current through the cold-start circuit while the glow indicator is active, then de-energises once the engine reaches running temperature. Fitted to the indirect-injection diesel engine and renewed as a set when starting becomes hard in cold conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Glow Plug do?
The Glow Plug is a cold-start heater that threads into the cylinder head, its tip projecting into the combustion chamber to warm the charge during pre-start. It helps a cold diesel fire and draws current while the glow indicator is lit. Indirect-injection Land Rover diesel.
How many glow plugs are needed for these engines?
Glow plugs are typically fitted one per cylinder, so a four-cylinder diesel like the 2.25 takes four. They're usually renewed as a complete set so every cylinder heats evenly, rather than replacing a single plug.
Which diesel engines does this glow plug fit?
It fits the Land Rover Series II/IIA 2.0 litre diesel, the Series III 2.25 diesel (3-bearing and 5-bearing up to engine number 36623971B), and early Defender. Check your Series III engine number against that break.
What are the signs a glow plug has failed?
A failed glow plug typically shows as hard starting when cold, white smoke on start-up or rough running until the engine warms. They usually fail from element burnout or a fouled tip, and are normally replaced as a set.
