Frequently asked questions

What does the primary pinion do in a Land Rover Series gearbox?
The primary pinion is the input gear of the Land Rover Series 2 and 3 manual gearbox, mounted on the primary shaft. It carries the constant-mesh gear that drives the layshaft, transmitting engine torque into the gear train. It suits the 4 and 6 cylinder gearbox, not the V8.
Which Series gearboxes does this primary pinion fit?
This primary pinion fits the Land Rover Series 2 and 3 manual gearbox with 4 and 6 cylinder engines, typically up to gearbox Suffix C. It doesn't suit V8 applications. Confirm your gearbox suffix before ordering, as later gear trains differ.
What are the signs a primary pinion needs replacing?
A worn primary pinion typically shows as whining or growling in gear, difficulty engaging top gear, or jumping out of gear on a Series gearbox. Chipped or pitted constant-mesh teeth mean replacement. The gearbox is usually rebuilt as a set, so inspect the mating gears too.
