Vacuum Advance Unit for the ignition distributor on the 3.5L V8 petrol engine.

This vacuum capsule mounts on the side of the distributor and connects by a small pipe to a vacuum take-off at the carburettor or inlet manifold. Under light load, vacuum draws the diaphragm against its spring and the linkage rotates the distributor pick-up base plate to advance the ignition timing, improving part-throttle efficiency; as load increases and vacuum falls the timing returns.

A ruptured diaphragm or seized linkage shows up as poor part-throttle running, pinking, or loss of economy.

Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC5092 vacuum advance unit do?
The RTC5092 vacuum advance capsule mounts on the ignition distributor of the 3.5L V8 petrol engine. Under light throttle it uses manifold or carburettor vacuum to rotate the distributor base plate and advance the ignition timing, improving part-throttle efficiency. As load rises and vacuum drops, the timing returns.
Which Land Rover models use this vacuum advance capsule?
This vacuum advance capsule fits the 3.5L V8 petrol engine on Land Rover Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1986-1994). On the Range Rover Classic it covers twin-carb and EFI distributors. Confirm you have the V8 distributor setup before ordering.
What are the symptoms of a failed vacuum advance?
A failed vacuum advance typically shows as poor part-throttle running, pinking under light load, or a drop in fuel economy. The usual causes are a ruptured diaphragm inside the capsule or a seized linkage, so the timing no longer advances. Check the capsule holds vacuum if the V8 runs flat at cruise.
