Gearbox Seal - MT82 Output Shaft for the MT82 6-speed manual transmission fitted to the Defender 2.4 TDCi (Puma) from 2007 to 2016.

This oil seal fits at the output shaft of the MT82 gearbox, sealing the point where the output shaft exits the gearbox casing to connect with the transfer box input. It prevents gearbox oil loss at this interface. A retaining clip (part TYC500160) secures the seal in position.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MT82 gearbox seal (TZB500140) for?
The TZB500140 oil seal fits at the output shaft of the MT82 6-speed manual gearbox, sealing where the shaft exits the casing to meet the transfer box. It prevents gearbox oil loss at that joint on the Land Rover Defender 2007-2016 with the MT82 transmission.
What are the signs this gearbox seal needs replacing?
The main sign is an oil leak at the rear of the MT82 gearbox where it meets the transfer box. A hardened or worn output shaft seal lets gearbox oil escape onto the transfer box or chassis. Left unchecked, a dropping oil level risks gearbox damage on the Defender.
Do I need the retaining clip when replacing this seal?
Yes. The retaining clip, part TYC500160, secures this output shaft seal in position on the MT82 gearbox. It's worth fitting a new clip alongside the seal so it's held securely in its bore. Both parts fit the Land Rover Defender 2007-2016.
Is fitting the MT82 output shaft seal a DIY job?
Fitting the output shaft seal typically means removing the propshaft and often the transfer box to reach the rear of the MT82 gearbox, so it's usually a job for an experienced DIYer or a workshop. A seal driver helps seat the new seal squarely without distorting it.
